1. Start with the serving size and suggested use
The first number to check is not the largest milligram figure on the label. It is the serving size.
A serving may be one capsule, two capsules, several capsules, a scoop, or another measured amount. The quantities in the Supplement Facts panel are generally presented per serving, so understanding the serving size helps you interpret everything that follows.
Then read the suggested use. It tells you how the manufacturer intends the product to be taken. More is not automatically better, and taking extra servings can change your intake substantially.
2. Read the Supplement Facts amounts carefully
A good label should make it straightforward to see what dietary ingredients are present and how much is provided per serving where individual amounts are required to be listed.
That does not mean the biggest number on the label is automatically the best formula. Amounts need context. For vitamins and minerals, the listed quantity may refer to the nutrient itself rather than the total weight of the compound that supplies it. For botanicals, the plant part, extract, and standardization can matter alongside the milligram amount.

3. Understand proprietary blends in context
A proprietary blend is a permitted labeling format in which the label lists the blend's total weight and identifies the ingredients in the blend, while the individual amount of every ingredient may not be disclosed separately.
That format gives you less precision for comparing each component one by one with published research, but the presence of a proprietary blend does not, by itself, determine the quality of the finished product.
The better question is whether the overall label is clear about what the product contains, how it should be used, and whether the claims made for the product are appropriately supported.

4. Look at the ingredient form—not just the ingredient name
Two products can list the same general ingredient name and still be materially different.
For a mineral, the source compound may differ. For a botanical, the species, plant part, extract type, and standardization may differ. Research conducted on one specific preparation does not automatically apply to every preparation that shares the same headline ingredient name.
This is why a useful comparison asks more than "How many milligrams?" It also asks: What form is it? What exactly was studied? And does that evidence actually match the ingredient in this product?
5. Understand manufacturing and quality-verification claims
Several quality terms are often used together, but they describe different things.
FDA requires companies that manufacture, package, label, or hold dietary supplements to follow current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements designed to help ensure identity, purity, quality, strength, and composition. FDA also explains that dietary supplements are not approved by the agency before they are marketed in the way prescription drugs are. Independent certification or testing can add another layer of verification, depending on the program. For example, NSF describes its supplement certification program as including label-claim review and contaminant testing. The important distinction is simple: manufacturing standards, facility registration, finished-product testing, and third-party certification are related quality signals, but they are not interchangeable terms.
6. Review warnings, allergens, and other ingredients
The front of the bottle is designed to summarize the product. The full label is where you find the details that matter for your individual situation.
Review any caution statements, allergen information, and the "other ingredients" list. Other ingredients can include capsule materials, binders, flow agents, flavors, sweeteners, or other components used to manufacture the finished product. Their presence is not automatically a negative; the key is knowing what is in the product and whether it fits your needs.
If you take prescription medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or are considering a supplement for a child, discuss the product with a qualified healthcare professional before use.
7. Choose claims that stay close to the evidence
Strong supplement communication is usually precise rather than dramatic.
Dietary supplements can make certain structure/function and general well-being claims when the company has appropriate substantiation and the claim is truthful and not misleading. In practical terms, phrases such as "supports normal cognitive function" or "supports a healthy stress response" are fundamentally different from claiming that a supplement treats a neurological or psychiatric disorder.
Precision is not weaker marketing. In a science-led category, it is a signal that a brand understands the boundary between what is known, what is plausible, and what has not been established.
What quality looks like in practice
A quality supplement should make the important information easy to find rather than forcing you to decode the label.
- You can identify the serving size and suggested use.
- You can see the listed dietary ingredients and understand how they are presented.
- The ingredient form is clear enough to make a meaningful comparison.
- Quality and manufacturing language is specific rather than vague.
- Warnings and other ingredients are disclosed.
